Tobias Goulden, a longstanding member and biodynamic farmer and grower, has recently taken on the tenancy of Hapstead Camphill farm which Frankie Van Der Stok managed for many years. It is a mile from Buckfastleigh and has wonderful views from some fields, looking over Buckfastleigh right across to the coast.
Tobias’s vision fully embraces the social aspects of biodynamics and community participation and could, if successful, offer much to the area both in terms of food availability and work opportunities for young people and those with social difficulties. He has formed a community interest company with Jo Clark from ‘On the Hill ‘ and head teacher Mike Rees-Lee. A gofundme page has been set up as they need to raise funds for farm machinery.
A report on progress will hopefully go out with the next BD Group newsletter. More details and a full breakdown of costs can be found in the ‘gofundme’ link.
You may be interested to hear that a considerable number of back issues of the Biodyamic Association members’ magazine ‘Star and Furrow’ are now available free online. They contain a wealth of really useful articles and would be particularly interesting for people new to biodynamics.
I am posting this on behalf of Laura who was a valued member of our group before moving to Plas Dwbl in Wales.
With a heavy-heart(s) Laura and Jim Wallwork are placing their 49 acre smallholding up for sale. It is called Lopthorne and comprises of rare Devon culm and ancient woodland. It has been conservation-grazed by native cattle in order to enhance or at least manage the immense biodiversity. http://www.andrewlane.biz/property-for-sale.php
It has been biodynamic Demeter certified for 2 years and now organic Demeter certified upon our relocation nearly 3 years ago.
The reason why I thought it may be of interest to you is because it is an unusual slice of pre-industrial Devon: It has never been ploughed, drained or (as far as we can research) sprayed (bar BD sprays). The land has its own ‘being’ as a consequence. If you are interested in observing the elementals then I recommend a visit. It does deserve a sensitive guardian.
